How to Push Back Cuticles Safely (and Why Glass Beats Metal)
By the LunaNail Atelier · Updated
Short answer: soften the cuticles first with warm water or cuticle oil, then hold the pusher at a low angle and ease the cuticle back with light pressure, never scraping. Do it once or twice a week, not daily, and push rather than cut. A glass cuticle pusher is the gentlest option: it is smooth, does not rust and rinses clean.
Cuticle vs eponychium: what you are actually pushing
The cuticle is the thin, dead skin that clings to the nail plate. The eponychium is the living fold of skin at the base of the nail. Pushing back gently lifts the dead layer off the nail. The living skin should be left intact, because it seals the nail area.
Step by step
- Soften: after a shower, or after soaking fingertips in warm water for a few minutes, roll a drop of cuticle oil on each nail.
- Angle: hold the slanted end of the pusher almost flat against the nail.
- Ease back: with light, small strokes, move the cuticle toward the base of the nail. Do not force or dig.
- Tidy: use the pointed end to clean gently around the sides and under the free edge.
- Finish: massage in more oil and rinse the pusher clean.

How often should you push back cuticles?
Once or twice a week is enough for most people. On the other days, daily cuticle oil keeps them soft and less likely to grow over the nail. In winter, follow our dry cuticle routine.
Should you cut your cuticles?
Many nail professionals advise against cutting living skin at home. Trimming can leave ragged edges and open small cuts. If you must remove a hangnail, clip only the loose piece of dead skin.

Frequently asked questions
Can I push back cuticles without soaking?
It is better to soften them first. Dry cuticles are more likely to tear.
Should I push back cuticles before gel polish?
Yes. Gently pushing them back gives a clean surface so gel does not touch the skin. Wipe away any oil before applying gel.
How do I clean a glass cuticle pusher?
Rinse it under water with a little soap, dry it and store it in its case.
